The Triangle of Youth

A youthful face has 3 unique features: high cheekbones, full cheek volume and a well-defined jawline. These three attributes are often referred to as the “triangle of youth”, characterizing a youthful face by a V-shape appearance. The base of the V is a point at the chin and extends upward and outward to the light reflecting points of the cheeks.

The Inverted V

As we age, this youthful triangle often becomes inverted. Aging is of course unique to each individual with genetics playing an important role in aging and other factors like exposure to the sun and diet influencing when aging begins and how fast it progresses.

Generally though as we age our face becomes more oblong. With ageing we experience a loss of collagen and elastin, which can lead to the formation of dynamic wrinkles, like laugh lines, frown lines, and crow’s feet. Also, our facial bone changes and soft tissues (like muscles) fall due to gravity.

Facial bones provide the foundation for muscle, fat-pads, and skin. A youthful bone structure has full and high cheeks—part of the “triangle of youth” talked about above—and defined brow bones as well as less sunken eye areas. With age, bone loss changes the dimensions and contours of our face, causing areas around our eyes to get larger, a decrease in the angle of our brow bone, and a jawline that is less defined. Also aging results in facial fat-pads getting thinner and descending while the fat-pads beneath the chin can become more prominent, causing the lower face to appear fuller. Thus, the widely discussed inverted V shaped face starts taking form as we get older.

Treatment Options to Address Signs of Ageing

Even if you are lucky enough to have genes that mean you look much younger than you actually are, age-related changes in our facial appearance are inevitable. These changes reflect our joys and challenges in life and some choose to simply celebrate them. However, this approach is not for everyone and some might like to postpone embracing those changes.

Fortunately these signs of aging can be minimized and with the triangle of youth in mind, below you can find just a sample of some of the things that can be done to give your face a more youthful appearance:

Sun Protection

Protecting your face from the sun damage by using creams with SPF is the very best way to avoid premature signs of aging and keep your skin looking youthful. Much of the damage comes from the UVA part of the light spectrum, so you need to use a cream with SPF that protects against it all year round.

HydraFacial

HydraFacial is like no other facial that you’ve ever experienced. It is a deep cleansing and exfoliating treatment that provides instantly visible results after every treatment while improving the overall health of your skin and giving you a complexion that you’ll love. It uses advanced, patented vortex technology to deliver botanical ingredients with the most desirable nutrients such as hyaluronic acid, horse chestnut seed extract, red algae extract, copper zinc and magnesium peptides. It is also packed full of the most powerful antioxidants which work to counteract the damage of free radicals – caused by pollution, sun and stress – which can damage the skin, accelerating the aging process. The HydraFacial is designed to improve the appearance of congested pores, uneven skin tones, fine lines and acne prone skin. Find out more about our Hydrafacial treatment here.
